Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) - Internet Searching

Find answers about how Caylix makes searching the internet safer. Let us know if you have any more questions and/or answers for us to add here.

The new search engine uses Google behind the scenes. To ensure that the results are still safe, we use 3 levels of filtering:

  1. First: Google's own SafeSearch. This Google feature automatically filters out any results that Google considers unsafe, including illegal and pornographic content.
  2. Our Caylix Flexible filter. If a site is blacklisted or blocked by our word filter, the entire result will be removed from the result list. Not even the title or URL will be displayed.
  3. Caylix Safe whitelist filter. If a website is on the Caylix Whitelist, then the result is shown.

For the displayed results, there are some buttons to request Rescreening or addition to the whitelist.

** NEW - October 28, 2010 **

The SafeSearch now allows searching for images on the whitelist! This required a complete rewrite of all our code but provides for super safe image results.

Why did you build the Caylix Safe Search?

We have done this for a few reasons. The first is to make Caylix Safe (the "Whitelist") more usable for Safe users. We realized that doing internet research can be difficult with the whitelist, and that having a safe search option based on Google is critical. The second reason is to help Flexible users to switch to Safe, if they rarely need full Internet access and only visit a few sites. A third reason is so that Caylix users can better help to improve the size and quality of the whitelist, which helps everyone.

If you have any ideas or requests or feedback, let us know!

Yes! We have several available.

The following allows you to select some text on a web page, then right click it and choose Safe Search:

The following allows you to right click any web page and choose 'Whitelist this page':

The following allows you to right click any web page and choose 'Rescreen this page':

Note: if you have Mozilla Firefox, you can use the IE Activities (Accelerators) add-on to install the above accelerators.

Don't have Internet Explorer version 8? try the following favorites instead:

Want a quick 'n easy way to request rescreening of an inappropriate webpage you find? Right click Caylix: REPORT THIS SITE, then choose "Add to Favorites..." (Internet Explorer) or "Bookmark this link" (Firefox).

Tip: move the favorite to your bookmarks toolbar for easy one-click access!

To help us build the whitelist for Caylix Whitelist users, right click Caylix: ADD TO WHITELIST, then choose "Add to Favorites..." (Internet Explorer) or "Bookmark this link" (Firefox).

We do our best to provide both a very safe internet filter as well as a useful but safe search engine for our whitelist (Caylix Safe) users.

Because the Internet is constantly changing, some stray results may slip through. Note that these sites are not not necessarily available to whitelist users! If you see a link that says "Add to whitelist" after a result, then that site is not on the whitelist.

Please help us improve our filter by taking 2 seconds to click the "Rescreen" link after the result. This will send the result to our volunteers who will very soon block the page - normally within a day.

Safe Search will provide anywhere from 0 - 8 results per page. The reasons are some simple reasons for this:

  1. The interface we use to Google only permits either 4 or 8 results per page. We use the option for 8 per page.
  2. Some or all of the search results may not be permitted by Caylix Flexible. For a description of how this works, see this page.
  3. Because we send each and every Google result through the Caylix filter, this adds a lot of load on our servers. Therefore, filling in the results from the next pages would take a long time and probably not give you good results anyway./li>

With over 72% of the internet search market share, Google is obviously the #1 search engine. It's everyone's favorite.

  1. We enforce Google's "Strict" SafeSearch option for both normal and image searches
  2. URL filtering is applied to all Google searches and result pages.
  3. Content filtering is applied to the result pages
  4. Cached pages are also filtered
