Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) - Knowledge Base - Technical issues

This category covers general technical issues such as common error messages with the internet, email, and other programs on your computer.

If Yahoo Messenger is indicating that it can't connect due to a connection problem, please ask us to enable the Easy Option on your connection first. This solves most problems.

Another thing you can try is to enable the Proxy setting in the program.

To configure Yahoo Messenger proxy settings:
• Run Yahoo Messenger and open the Login menu.
• Select Preferences, then click on the 'Connection' tab.
• Set proxy settings: click on the 'Use proxies' and enter your proxy server address of proxy.caylix.com, port 3128

In system tray (by the clock), right click the Dropbox icon and choose Preferences.
Click Network icon on top
Uncheck 'choose best upload rate', and change the upload rate to 40

Proxy Settings:
- click Manually enter proxy settings
- Server proxy.caylix.com, port 3127
- Check the "Proxy server requires password"
- Enter your @caylix.com username and password.

By default, MSN messenger is blocked. This may cause Hotmail to also fail, because they share common components for logging in.

The solution is to have MSN enabled on your account. Click here for more information.

Adobe's download manager is known to be buggy and have problems with proxy servers.

If the Download Manager shows a 'Server Error' when attempting to install Flash, then just cancel the download manager. Once the download starts, the Adobe website will normally change to a 'download complete' page that tests your Flash installation. If the download failed, then it will try to install the flash player without the download manager; you may need to reload the page.

If you need assistance, please contact our helpdesk. We can do a screen sharing session to get to the bottom of the matter.

An alternative technique is to use a browser other then Internet Explorer. Try Google Chrome; it will prompt to install the Flash player normally without using the Adobe download manager.

This website has known issues with displaying PDFs, such as the newsletters.

A workaround is to download the PDF by right-clicking the link and choosing 'Save as', rather then just clicking it as usual. Once the PDF is saved to your computer's hard drive, you should be able to open it from there no problem.

If the above steps don't help, then please try empty your browser cache first, then try save the PDF again.

If you need assistance, please contact our Support Team and mention this page, and they can help you download the page. Or, feel free to contact the BC Milk Board to have them fix their website to work with proxy servers.

Windows Updates on Windows Vista, 2008, or 7 is sometimes not smart enough to find your proxy server setting in Internet Explorer. This is because the updating process runs as Administrator or "SYSTEM" rather then your actual username. The workaround is as follows:

  • Click the start button
  • Type 'cmd'. Windows should display cmd.exe as the first option.
  • Right click cmd.exe, and choose "Run as administrator"
  • In the window that appears, type the following command:
    netsh winhttp set proxy proxy.caylix.com:3127
  • Then try the windows updates again.

The newer versions of Simply Accounting use a new kind of database that has lots of problems with Windows Vista. If you get an error message that you can't connect to the Connection Manager, please try:

Add bypass in your Internet Explorer settings

  • Open Internet Explorer
  • Go to Tools -> Internet Options -> Connections -> LAN Settings
  • Enable the checkbox for Bypass proxy server for local addresses
  • Open advanced, and enter "localhost; 127.0.0.1" (without the quotes) into the Exceptions box.
  • click OK, OK.

Static vs DHCP IP address

If the proxy bypass for localhost doesn't help, then you should contact Simply Accounting for further assistance. If there is still no progress, a known workaround is to change your computer to use a Static IP address instead of automatic configuration via the DHCP protocol. If you need assistance with this change, you can ask your regular IT technician or hire Caylix helpdesk services for this. Note - this IP change will only work if you have a router in your business or home.

Windows Vista, 7, and 2008 may have problems connecting to the Caylix Proxy Server in order to download updates. Older versions of Windows could use the proxycfg.exe command, but that has been removed since Vista. Here is a solution:
  1. Open a cmd.exe window as administrator (escalated privileges)
  2. Run: netsh winhttp set proxy proxy.caylix.com:3128

This is caused by an abnormal disconnection while downloading new emails from our server. Typically this only happens with dialup, when your dialup connection drops while you are checking for new email. It can also happen with mobile devices such as Blackberry.

The mailbox lock should disappear within an hour; if not, give us a call and we can reset your mailbox. Avoid disconnecting your Internet while downloading your emails. For mobile devices, you may have better luck using the IMAP protocol which does not cause the mailbox to be locked.
